Ethyl 2-ethylhexanoate – Applications

It is an important synthetic fragrance raw material (also called Orris ester), widely applied in fine perfumes, personal-care products and air freshener formulations. It delivers unique fresh iris-root (orris) floral aroma together with mild fruity-pineapple notes, which cannot be easily replaced by straight-chain ethyl esters. It is normally added at low dosage (less than 1% in fragrance concentrate) to enrich floral-fruity top notes, enhance fragrance layering and reduce dependence on expensive natural iris extracts, improving formula cost-performance.

It acts as cosmetic emollient and skin-conditioning agent in skincare and cosmetic products. Thanks to its branched-ester structure, it brings non-greasy, silky skin feel; it forms a thin protective film on skin surface to lower transepidermal water loss, soften cuticle and improve skin smoothness. Meanwhile it serves as auxiliary solubilizer for oil-soluble perfume and functional actives, improving system fluidity and emulsion stability in cream, lotion and body care formulations.

It serves as key organic synthesis intermediate for preparing lipophilic metal 2-ethylhexanoate salts (cobalt, zirconium, manganese etc.) widely used in polymer industry. The derived metal salts are oil-soluble polymerization catalysts and paint driers for coatings, resin synthesis and polymer production. Its branched-chain ester structure provides good compatibility with non-polar organic media, helping to adjust catalytic activity for polymerization reactions and accelerate oxidative drying of solvent-borne paint systems.
