Sucrose octaacetate is a white crystalline powder with an intense bitter taste. It is soluble in ethanol, methanol, acetone and chloroform, while very slightly soluble in water. It is widely used as a bittering agent, alcohol denaturant, plasticizer and repellent.
1. Dissolution Method
Dissolve it in compatible organic solvents (ethanol, methanol, acetone, etc.) under stirring before dosing. Direct addition into water is not recommended due to poor water solubility. Warm solvent can accelerate dissolution, avoid excessive heating.
2. Typical Application Methods
Plastics, masterbatch (anti-bite / anti-chew purpose): Mix the powder together with resin, plasticizer and other additives by high-speed mixing, then extrude and granulate. Recommended dosage: 0.1%–0.5% by weight of the base resin.
Coatings & paints: Prepare a stock solution with solvent first, then add into coating formula and stir evenly. It works as bitter deterrent and plasticizer.
Liquid products (cleaner, solvent, denatured alcohol): Prepare dilute solution under continuous agitation. Typical dosage range: 0.001%–0.01% for bitter marking.
Paper impregnation: Dissolve in organic solvent, dip or coat paper, then dry. It improves stiffness and water resistance.
